This is a verse-by-verse audio teaching of Haggai 2:1-9. The date given in 2:1 is very important for the setting of these first 9 verses. On the 15th day of the 7th month was the beginning of the Feast of Tabernacles, so the 21st day would have been the last day (inclusive). This major pilgrimage feast required all Hebrew males to come to Jerusalem. They could not come empty-handed. They lived in booths (shelters) for 7 days and the rejoiced greatly at the bountiful harvest that God had provided. We know from Chapter 1, that a drought had plagued the whole land, and that they would have had little to nothing to offer the Lord. This would have been a very depressing and discouraging time for them. Haggai the prophet speak a "now word" right into this negative season the life of the people. The elderly folks, over 70 years of age would have also discouraged the people because the "former" house (temple) would have been more glorious than anything now that was in ruins. But God commands them to be strong and work, because He is with them. Even from the deliverance from Egypt and the giving of the law, He has remained faithful, and His Spirit remains among them. What happened at Mount Sinai caused the earth to shake, but now the Lord will shake "heaven and earth." We hold that the "Desire of all nations" is not the treasures or "silver and gold" of verse 8, but the Lord Jesus. Only Jesus can shake all nations and fill the temple with His glory, not money or material wealth. Truly, everything of silver and gold belongs to Him. While others were boasting of the greatness of the original temple, the Lord said that the latter glory would be even greater than the former.
