This is the verse-by-verse audio teaching of Haggai 2:20-23. The prophet received a 2nd message on the same day as verses 10-19. However, this message was not for the priests but for Zerubbabel the governor and son of Shealtiel. The word of the Lord here elaborates further what was already said in verses 6-7 of this same chapter. God promises that He is going to "shake the heaven and the earth." These words are quoted by the writer of Hebrews in Chapter 12, verses 26-27. The Lord shook the earth with His voice at Mount Sinai, but at the 2nd coming of Jesus, He is going to shake not only the earth but also the heavens. This shaking will bring down everything that can be shaken so that the only thing that cannot be shaken - God's kingdom - will remain standing. The Lord is going to overthrow all political and military might among the nations. The judgment will be so great that armies will even turn against one another and destroy each other. This shows the futility of man's might and strength. Finally, we look at how Zerubbabel is the representative figure of the Messiah. He will be made like a signet ring because God has chosen him. Zerubbabel was in the Lord's genealogy in both Matthew and Luke, and he points us to Jesus, the One true ruler who will shake everything at His coming.
